“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”
“Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit. “
“Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way your walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”
Joseph Pilates
Pilates is the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through the Pilates Method you purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities. Joseph Pilates
Body - Rather than focus on a particular set of muscles, Pilates exercises develop and maintain the body as a whole, generating muscular power, endurance, suppleness, grace and skill.
Mind - Pilates exercises begin in the mind. With a strong focus on correct movement, we can reawaken dormant brain cells thus activating new areas and stimulating further function of the mind.
Spirit - Spiritual peace is the ultimate achievement in Pilates. To coordinate the body and mind with the spirit is to experience the fullness of health and happiness.
Pilates machines use a combination of springs and pulleys to build strength and flexibility. In Joseph Pilates' own words, " [The Pilates Method] develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong posture, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit." (Return to Life, 1945)
Common Pilates equipment include the Cadillac, Reformer, Chair, and the Barrel. These pieces use springs, bars, and paddles to support the body around your spine, promoting strength, breath, and focus.
Kelli utilizes smaller pieces of equipment like pads, wedges, pillows, and mats to make exercises more comfortable. At the same time, Pilates rings and balls can be used to add a challenge, encouraging uniform movement and deep muscular focus.
